Knowledge (Cognitive Domain)

Demonstrate understanding of basic sciences relevant to speciality. Describe etiology, pathophysiology, principles of diagnosis and management of common problems within the speciality in adults and children.

Identify social, economic, environmental and emotional determinants in a given case and take them into account for planning treatment.

Recognise conditions that may be outside the area of speciality or competence and refer them to an appropriate specialist.

Update knowledge by self-study and by attending courses, conferences, and seminars relevant to the speciality.

Undertake audit, use information technology, and carry out research, both basic and clinical, with the aim of publishing or presenting the work at academic gatherings.

Skills (Psychomotor Domain)

Take a proper clinical history, examine the patient, perform essential procedures, order relevant tests, and interpret them to arrive at a reasoned diagnosis about the condition.

Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics

To have a comprehensive understanding of the applied aspects of Basic Sciences including Research Methodology, Ethical issues in conducting research, informed consent, and writing a research protocol. This includes presenting and attending seminars or conferences and publishing papers in specialty journals regarding the same.

Describe aetiology, pathophysiology, periapical diagnosis, and management of common restorative and endodontic situations, including contemporary management of dental caries, trauma, and pulpal pathoses including periodontal situations.

To take proper chairside history, examine the patient, perform relevant medical and dental procedures and tests, interpret them to arrive at a reasonable diagnosis, and undertake complete patient monitoring including preoperative and postoperative care.

To perform all levels of restorative work as well as surgical and non-surgical endodontics including endodontic endo-osseous implants and endodontic-periodontal surgical procedures as part of a multidisciplinary approach to clinical conditions with appropriate knowledge of infection control measures.

To manage acute pulpal and pulpo-periodontal situations and also provide basic life-saving support in emergency situations.

To adopt ethical principles in all aspects of restorative and contemporary endodontics including non-surgical and surgical endodontics, with professional honesty and integrity as a priority, and apply high moral and ethical standards while carrying out human or animal research.

To update by self-study and by attending basic and advanced courses, conferences, seminars, and workshops in Conservative Dentistry, Endodontics, Dental Materials, and Restorative Dentistry, and to teach and guide colleagues and students.

To develop communication skills, in particular to explain various management options and obtain true informed consent from the patient, while ensuring dental care is provided regardless of social status, caste, creed, or religion.

Prosthodontics

To have adequate knowledge and understanding of etiology, diagnosis, and treatment planning of various conditions requiring Prosthodontic therapy.

To develop adequate skills in taking proper clinical history, examining the patient, and reading and interpreting radiographs and other investigations for diagnosis and treatment planning in order to restore the lost structures and functions of the stomatognathic system.

To acquire adequate skills and competence in performing various procedures related to complete dentures, removable and fixed partial dentures, implant-supported prosthesis, and maxillofacial prosthesis.

To adopt ethical principles in all Prosthodontic practice.

To develop skills to communicate in simple understandable language with patients and explain the principles of Prosthodontics, especially to geriatric patients.

To be able to interact with other specialties including medical specialties for planned team management of patients with craniofacial and oral acquired and congenital defects, TMJ syndromes, esthetic needs, and implant-supported prosthetics.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

To have adequate knowledge and understanding of etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment planning of various common oral and maxillofacial surgical problems, both minor and major in nature.

To perform with competence minor oral surgical procedures and common maxillofacial surgery and to manage them both surgically and medically, including evaluation, postsurgical care, fluid and electrolyte management, blood transfusion, and postsurgical pain management.

To identify social, cultural, economic, genetic, and environmental factors and their relevance to disease-process management in the oral and maxillofacial region and to have essential knowledge of personal hygiene and infection control, prevention of cross infection, and safe disposal of hospital waste in view of the high prevalence of Hepatitis and HIV.

To develop an attitude that adopts ethical principles in all aspects of surgical practice, with professional honesty and integrity, and willingness to share knowledge and adopt new surgical management techniques developed over time through scientific research.

To develop adequate communication skills, particularly in explaining various options available to manage a surgical problem, obtaining informed consent for the most appropriate treatment available at that time, and communicating effectively with professional colleagues.

Public Health Dentistry

To have a comprehensive understanding of the applied aspects of Basic Sciences including Research Methodology, Ethical issues in conducting research, informed consent, and writing a research protocol. This includes presenting and attending seminars or conferences and publishing papers in specialty journals regarding the same.

A thorough understanding of concepts, definitions, and determinants pertaining to health, disease, oral health and oral diseases, public health and dental public health, prevention of disease, promotion of health and oral health at a community level, and the role of environment and nutrition on health.

To have comprehensive knowledge, skills, and professional competence regarding preventive measures employed for the prevention of oral diseases at individual and community level and be able to organize implementation programmes at both levels.

To have an understanding of epidemiology, oral epidemiology, and its role in prevention of common oral diseases and to conduct ethically approved research toward the same end.

To understand the principles of code of ethics and code of conduct as per the council guidelines and the Dentist Act and to implement them in practice.

To understand the concept of teamwork and be able to conduct and organize field activities such as screening and treatment camps for medically indigent and vulnerable populations with humility and high moral and ethical standards, and to communicate effectively with NGOs and self-help groups.

Educate and create awareness through self-prepared IEC material regarding promotion of oral health and prevention of oral disease for the betterment of the community.

To comprehensively understand the concepts of primary health care and School Health Care programmes, understand community diagnosis and its importance in solving community-related oral health problems, and ensure referral of conditions outside the speciality to an appropriate health care professional.

Oral Medicine and Radiology

To know the etiology, pathophysiology, principles of diagnosis, and management of common disorders of the orofacial region.

To list differential diagnoses, identify necessary investigations, and frame treatment accordingly.

To perform chairside investigations and minor surgical procedures such as FNAC and biopsy to support the provisional diagnosis.

To know the diagnostic and therapeutic uses of different types of radiation and the application of advanced imaging techniques such as CBCT, MDCT, MRI, ultrasonography, and nuclear medicine in diagnosing diseases of the oromaxillofacial region.

To provide oral health care for medically complex patients including the diagnosis and management of medical conditions that affect the oral and maxillofacial region.

To develop adequate communication skills and ability to explain the disease process to the patient and obtain informed consent from the patient.

To know the imaging features of diseases affecting oral and paraoral structures, benign and malignant lesions, and recent advances in their management.

Oral Pathology

To have adequate knowledge and understanding of etiology, nature of disease processes, and their effects in order to achieve clinical and laboratory diagnosis skills.

To develop adequate skills to perform routine and specialized techniques for histopathological, cytological, and hematological evaluation of specimens related to oral and para-oral diseases.

To gain knowledge regarding advanced techniques like histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, applied biochemistry, and ultrastructural investigations for developing diagnostic skills.

To adopt ethical principles in various diagnostic procedures and research.

To gain knowledge of oral microbiology procedures and forensic dentistry regarding medicolegal evidence and post-mortem identification.

To be able to interact with other specialties including medical specialties for planned team management of patients in the diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial pathologies.

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

To have adequate knowledge and understanding of etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment planning of various orofacial malocclusions and malformations of the jaws.

To identify social, cultural, economic, genetic, and environmental factors leading to malocclusion and their relevance to management in the oral and maxillofacial region, and to have essential knowledge of personal hygiene and infection control, prevention of cross infection, and safe disposal of hospital waste.

To treat with competence minor or major malocclusions, common malformations of the jaws, and abnormalities of tooth position using removable or fixed appliances as appropriate.

To develop a high sense of morality and adopt ethical principles in all aspects of practice, professional honesty and integrity, and willingness to share knowledge and adopt new management techniques developed over time through scientific research.

To develop adequate communication skills particularly with patients, explain the various options available to manage a particular malocclusion, obtain informed consent for the most appropriate treatment available at the time, and communicate effectively with professional colleagues.

Periodontology

To understand and know the various periodontal problems and plan appropriate treatment for a given condition and perform appropriate periodontal therapy.

To apply theoretical and practical knowledge to educate and motivate patients regarding periodontal problems.

To know and understand the clinical outcomes of various major and minor surgical procedures.

To analyse and evaluate the post-treatment outcome and periodic recall visits.

To know and understand the major surgical procedures such as flap surgery, implant surgery, electrocautery, laser, and aesthetic periodontal procedures.

Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry

To introduce pediatric and preventive dentistry and its scope, the importance of understanding child psychology in pedodontics, various theories, application of psychological principles in dental management, child abuse and neglect, and both pharmacological and non-pharmacological behavior management techniques, along with management of special children.

To understand the growth and development of maxilla and mandible by explaining various theories, prenatal and postnatal factors affecting growth, age-related changes, development of occlusion from birth to adolescence, associated abnormalities, and differences between primary and permanent dentition, their chronology of eruption, anomalies, and management.

To have knowledge about dental caries, its etiology, classification, newer diagnostic methods, caries activity and susceptibility tests, the role of diet and nutrition, diet counseling, and preventive and restorative management including fluoride, pit and fissure sealants, preventive resin restoration, newer agents for caries prevention and remineralisation, caries vaccine, restorative materials, stainless steel crowns, pulpal and periapical disease management, and pediatric endodontics.

To explain the importance of preventive and interceptive orthodontics, the problems seen in primary and mixed dentition and their management, serial extraction, space management, oral habits and their etiology and management, and the role of myofunctional appliances.

To explain oral surgical procedures, indications and contraindications of extraction, different anesthetic techniques, dental trauma and its classification and management, and medical emergencies and their management.

To have an idea about school dental health programmes and the importance of a dental home in the dental care scenario.

To understand the normal gingiva and periodontium in children, and know the definition, etiology, pathogenesis, classification, and management of gingival and periodontal diseases seen in children and adolescence.
